Program History: In February 2003, Davidson Housing Coalition, in collaboration with Davidson College, began exploring the addition of an emergency home repair program to its services. After six months of research and regular meetings, HAMMERS was created to address a growing concern about the prevalence of substandard housing in our area. The goal of HAMMERS is to reduce the immediate threats to life, health, and safety in homes owned and occupied by lower wealth residents of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Mooresville. HAMMERS launched its first project in April 2005 and has completed repairs on more than 80 homes across the Lake Norman region since that time.
Home Before Repairs
Program Guidelines: The primary
goal of the HAMMERS program is to reduce the immediate threats to
life, health, and safety in homes owned and occupied by lower wealth
residents in our communities. Priorities for our services are the
elderly, disabled, single parents, or households with five or more
inhabitants, including children. HAMMERS is designed to correct
the most critical problems in a home that are posing the most severe
dangers to the inhabitants. It is not guaranteed that all problems
will be addressed through this program. The ultimate goal of HAMMERS
is to foster personal well-being for the homeowners and their families,
thereby increasing neighborhood pride through its services.
HAMMERS is governed by a committee of 13 individuals, both DHC board members and community volunteers. The committee meets once or twice monthly to review projects, and increase fundraising and advocacy efforts.
